Jones, Pilch Named to Verizon Academic All-District 2 Team

Jones has started at cornerback for the Scarlet Knights in all nine games in 2002, and is the team’s third leading tackler with 65 stops, including 54 solo stops. The 5-10, 175-pound resident of Scotch Plains, NJ, also has intercepted one pass, blocked two kicks and recovered two fumbles.
Jones, a finance major, leads the BIG EAST Conference and is No. 5 nationally in kickoff returns, averaging 29.4 yards per return. Jones has a pair of 100-yard kickoff returns for touchdowns this season, coming against Tennessee and Syracuse.
Junior RAY PILCH was selected to the 2002 Verizon Academic All-District 2 second team. Pilch, a criminal justice major from Piscataway, NJ, is the starting fullback for the Scarlet Knights. Pilch, used primarily as a blocking back for the Scarlet Knights, has carried three times for eight yards and also has nine receptions for 99 yards.
The 2002 Verizon Academic All-District 2 football teams were selected by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA). The District II region includes Delaware, the District of Columbia, Maryland, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Athletes named to the district team qualify for the national ballot, with the national team to be announced on December 2. To be nominated for the Verizon Academic All-America program, a student-athlete must be at least a sophomore with a 3.2 or higher cumulative grade point average and be a starter or significant reserve.
