Rutgers Extends Schiano Contract

With the two-year extension, Schiano’s contract will continue through the 2007 season. Schiano’s extension is under the same terms and agreements of his original contract, which was made when he was named the 28th head coach in Rutgers history on Dec. 1, 2000.
“I’ve made a thorough evaluation of the program and there’s no question that we’ve made substantial progress in the two years that Greg Schiano has been our head coach,” said Mulcahy in announcing the extension. “Greg has worked tirelessly to establish the foundation for future success at Rutgers, and we recognize that we need to ensure that he has the time and support necessary to achieve our goals.
“We are committed to Greg Schiano, just as he is committed to developing the Rutgers football program into one that everyone in the state of New Jersey will be proud of,” Mulcahy added.
Rutgers President Richard L. McCormick, who took office December 1, said, “Although it is early in my tenure, my discussions with Bob Mulcahy confirm that we share four goals for the university’s entire athletics program. First and foremost, we will ensure the academic success of our student athletes. Second, we will have a program of unquestioned integrity. Third, we have agreed the program must move toward budgetary self-sufficiency. And, finally, we are committed to success on the field.
“Bob Mulcahy’s leadership is moving our athletics program in the right direction, and I support his decision to give Coach Schiano the time he needs to build a successful football program,” McCormick said.
