Rutgers Edged by Army 4-3

With the team score tied 3-3, Army’s Lyndsey Nott earned the team victory for the Black Knights, beating freshman Jill Markowitz (Forest Hills, NY) in three sets, 7-6, 3-6, 6-1, at No. 6 singles to give Army its decisive fourth singles win.
Army and Rutgers split the first four singles matches to knot the score at 3-3. Andrea Weckstein (Holmdel, NJ) and Jennifer Hellier (Annapolis, MD) each suffered a loss as Army won at No.1 and No. 2 singles. RU won No. 3 and No. 4 singles with Carissa Sommerlad (Bradley Beach, NJ) and Alina Balasa (East Brunswick, NJ) picking up victories. Kaitlin Link’s (Ontario, Canada) loss at No. 5 singles set up the final decisive match.
Rutgers got off to a hot start, taking all three doubles matches to secure the first point of the match for the Scarlet Knights. Sommerlad and Weckstein downed Annie Collier and Megan Noble of Army, 8-4, at the No. 1 position. At No. 2, it was Hellier and Ketevan Shmakova (Dover, NJ) beating Marissa Limsiaco and Melanie Bundoc, 8-4. The third doubles match saw Link and Balasa pick up the win over Nott and Pam Chavez, 8-4
The Scarlet Knights return to action next Friday, Feb. 21, hosting BIG EAST foe Virginia Tech at 8 p.m. at the Rutgers Tennis Complex.
