Rutgers Sweeps Providence to Extend Win Streak to Six

EAST BRUNSWICK, NJ - The Rutgers women’s tennis team won its sixth straight match on Friday evening, sweeping the Providence Friars, 7-0, at the East Brunswick Tennis Center. The win improves the Scarlet Knights to 12-6 and 8-2 in BIG EAST competition.
RU took the doubles point, surrendering only four games in three matches. Senior co-captain Carissa Sommerlad (Bradley Beach, NJ) and sophomore Andrea Weckstein (Homdel, NJ) beat Sara Bitetti and Lindsey Christensen at the No. 1 spot, 8-0. Senior co-captain Jennifer Hellier (Annapolis, MD) and freshman Ketevan Shmakova (Dover, NJ) downed Cheri Laplane and Molly Gilbride, 8-3, at No. 2 doubles. No. 3 doubles saw junior Kaitlin Link (Ontario, Canada) and sophomore Helen Magomedova (Brooklyn, NY) beat Nicole Rodger and Katie Viola, 8-1.
Rutgers continued its dominance in singles play, surrendering just seven games in six matches. Weckstein beat Lapane, 6-0, 6-2, at the No. 1 singles position. Sommerlad downed Bitetti, 6-2, 6-1, at No. 2 singles for her 12th win of the spring. Hellier earned the win at No. 3 singles, shutting out Gilbride, 6-0, 6-0. Balasa earned her ninth consecutive victory at No. 4 singles on Friday, beating Christensen, 6-1, 6-0. Shmakova beat Rodger at No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-0, while freshman Jill Markowitz (Forest Hills, NY) downed Trisha Pollock, 6-0, 6-0.
The women will wrap up the regular season on Sunday, April 13, facing Georgetown at 12:00 p.m. at the Rutgers Tennis Complex.
