Rutgers Splits Doubleheader at Rider

LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ - The Rutgers softball team (19-14) earned a split in its doubleheader at Rider (13-15) April 17, holding on to win game one, 7-6, before losing the nightcap, 5-2.
The Scarlet Knights staked themselves to a 7-0 lead after two and a half innings in game one, then withstood a rally in the bottom of the third to hold on for the win. Rutgers got its first pair of runs in the first inning thanks to sophomore Jenny Card (Miami, FL), who hit her third home run of the season over the left-field fence, scoring freshman Courtney Love (Seabrook, TX).
RU tacked on five more runs in the third. Love, Card and sophomore Chrystal Vargas (Jersey City, NJ) each contributed RBI-singles, and two Rider errors led to two more runs for the Knights.
Rider scored five runs in the bottom half of the third, stringing together five straight hits to start the inning, including a double, triple and two-run home run. The Broncs scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth, but RU was able to shut down the rally in time to save the victory.
Senior Andria Koehler (Sellersville, PA) struck out nine while allowing 12 hits, one walk and five earned runs in the complete-game victory (9-4). Card led the RU offense, going 2-for-2 with three RBI and two runs scored.
In the nightcap, RU again scored two runs in its first at-bat. Junior Brittney Neer (Tallahassee, FL) started with a leadoff single and stolen base, then advanced to third on a passed ball. Card reached base thanks to a walk, and Neer scored as Card moved to second on a wild pitch. Card advanced to third on a second wild pitch, and an error on a ball off Vargas' bat plated Card to make the score 2-0.
Rider cut the deficit to one with a second-inning score, then took control of the game with a four-run third inning.
Neer led the RU offense with a 4-for-4 performance in game two, scoring one run. Freshman Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) suffered the loss (4-3), giving up five hits and five runs, three of which were earned, while striking out one batter and walking two in 2.1 innings. Junior Brielle Cosentino Carlstadt, NJ) pitched the final 3.2 innings for the Knights, scattering two hits while collecting three strikeouts.
RU will next be in action Saturday, April 19, when the Scarlet Knights return to BIG EAST action with a doubleheader at Villanova. First pitch is at 12:00 p.m.
