Rutgers Swept by Delaware

NEWARK, DE - The Rutgers softball team (25-20, 7-9 BIG EAST) dropped two games at the University of Delaware (18-18-1) on Wednesday, losing the first 7-1 and falling in the nightcap, 4-3.
In the first game of the day, the University of Delaware started the game strong with four runs, picking up two in the second and one more in the fourth inning to make the final score, 7-1. The Scarlet Knights scored their only run in the seventh inning. Megan Antonucci (Warrington, PA) reached first after being hit by a pitch. Melissa Bradford (Pennsville, NJ) entered the game to pinch hit and doubled to right center to plate Antonucci.
Andria Koehler (Sellersville, PA) pitched the first 0.1 inning of the game, giving up four earned runs on four hits. Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) came in to relieve Koehler for 3.2 innings, allowing three earned runs on six hits and striking out three. Christine Czarnecki (Hamilton, NJ) pitched the last 2.0 innings, giving up one hit in the seven batters she faced.
In the second game, the Scarlet Knights had three runs on six hits but lost in a seventh-inning double down the left field line by the Blue Hens. The first run of the game came in the third inning after Brittney Neer (Tallahassee, FL), who was 1-for-3 in the game, singled to the shortstop. She then advanced to second on Jen Jacoby’s (Agoura Hills, CA) sacrifice bunt. Nichole Cruz (Bremerton, WA) brought home Neer on a groundout to the pitcher.
The Scarlet Knights tied up the game at three runs apiece in the fourth inning. Jenny Card (Miami, FL) reached on a fielding error and Nikki Childress (Roanoke, VA) had a double to center field to advance Card to third. Antonucci doubled down the right field line to score both Childress and Card. Childress led the team offensively, finishing the game 2-for-3.
Brielle Cosentino (Carlstadt, NJ) pitched 2.2 innings, allowing three earned
runs on eight hits. Cosentino walked one and struck out three. Koehler came
in for the last 4.0 innings, allowing one run, three hits and two walks, while
striking out three.
Despite RU’s fight back, the Blue Hens won the game after getting another
run in the seventh inning.
The Scarlet Knights will return to action in a BIG EAST doubleheader on Friday,
May 2, in Syracuse, NY.
