Rutgers Splits With Notre Dame in Season Finale

SOUTH BEND, IN - The Rutgers softball team ended its 2003 campaign (26-23, 8-12 BIG EAST) with a 2-0 game one upset of Notre Dame (33-15, 14-3 BIG EAST), but fell in the nightcap 1-0.
In the first game, Andria Koehler (Sellersville, PA) had a solid performance to improve to 13-8, throwing seven strong innings, allowing five hits and no walks. Koehler struck out eight, seven of which were called out looking.
In a well-executed fourth inning, the Scarlet Knights broke the scoreless game with two runs. Crystal Vargas (Jersey City, NJ) had solid line drive single to left and Nikki Childress (Roanoke, VA) reached first on a fielder's choice. During Megan Antonucci's (Warrington, PA) at bat, the Scarlet Knights took advantage of a wild pitch of which the catcher lost sight, leaving Childress at third and plating Vargas. With two outs, Meaghan Asselta (Ramsey, NJ) had a deep double into left-center to send home Childress.
In the nightcap, UND got on the board quickly with an RBI triple that landed just inside the fence in left center field. Asselta turned a smart double play to get out of the second inning with no runs when she caught a line drive to short and shot it over to Antonucci at first to catch the base runner.
Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) pitched the first three innings of the second game, allowing one unearned run from two hits as well as two walks. Koehler entered to face the second batter in the fourth inning and ended the inning with the three batters she faced with two fly balls and a strikeout. Koehler ended the game with two hits in three innings and two strikeouts.
