PISCATAWAY, NJ - Junior Scott Gahagan (Old Bridge, NJ) scored the only goal Rutgers would need as it knocked off 12th-ranked Boston College, 1-0, before 1,376 fans at Yurcak Field on Saturday evening in men's soccer action. With the win, Rutgers improves to 5-4-3 overall and 2-1-2 in the BIG EAST, while Boston College falls to 7-3-0 overall and 4-3-0 in conference.
Gahagan scored with just 56 seconds remaining in the first overtime as he beat BC goalie Issey Maholo following a throw-in by sophomore Brinker Dailey (Atlanta, GA). Gahagan received the throw-in, dribbled to the left post and flicked a shot past Maholo for the game-winner.
In a game dominated by defense, a combined 25 fouls were called. The Scarlet Knights had several scoring chances in the first half, including a shot by Gustavo Mora (Asuncion, Paraguay) that sailed just over the goal early in regulation.
The Rutgers defense did now allow a Boston College shot until midway through the second half, and goalie Lubos Ancin (Burlington, NJ) earned his second consecutive shutout. The Eagles' best scoring opportunity came with under 10 minutes to play in regulation when Charlie Davies was stopped by Ancin on a point-blank shot.
Rutgers pressed for the game-winning goal in regulation, and had a chance when Chris Karcz (Clifton, NJ) headed a ball from less then 10 yards out. On the rebound, the Scarlet Knights had another opportunity, but Karcz's shot was wide of the goal.
The Scarlet Knights held a 8-2 advantage in corner kicks and outshot the Eagles, 9-3.
Rutgers return to action on Wednesday, Oct. 13, when it hosts Georgetown at 7:00 p.m. at Yurcak Field.
