Campbell Named MBWA Player of the Week

PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers’ Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ) has been named the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Division I Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the group announced Jan. 10.
Campbell, a 6-2 junior forward, averaged 13.5 points and 6.0 rebounds per game in two Rutgers victories last week. In the 51-49 overtime upset of No. 1/1 LSU Jan. 5, Campbell contributed 12 points and eight rebounds, shooting 6-for-7 (.857) from the floor. In the Scarlet Knights’ 64-49 BIG EAST season-opening victory at St. John’s Jan. 8, she tallied 15 points and four rebounds, making five of seven (.714) field goals.
Campbell was instrumental in RU’s three straight upsets of top-10 teams, averaging 11.0 points and 5.3 rebounds per contest while shooting 75.0 (15-20) percent from the field during the stretch. RU defeated No. 8/8 Tennessee 65-51 Dec. 29, No. 4/3 Texas 51-47 Jan. 2, and No. 1/1 LSU 51-49 in overtime Jan. 5, giving the Scarlet Knights three consecutive wins against top-10 teams in an eight-day span.
Rutgers will play two BIG EAST Conference home games in three days -- Pittsburgh (9-4, 1-1 BIG EAST) Tuesday, Jan. 11, and Georgetown (5-8, 0-2 BIG EAST) Thursday, Jan. 13.
