No. 4/7 Rutgers Rolls Past Georgetown 69-33
Jan 13 | Women's Basketball
PISCATAWAY, NJ – A tenacious Rutgers defense held Georgetown scoreless for a span of nearly 10 minutes in the first half as the No. 4/7 Scarlet Knights (12-2, 3-0 BIG EAST) ran their winning streak to seven games with a 69-33 victory over Georgetown (5-9, 0-3 BIG EAST) on Thursday at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.
Leading 8-7 with 15:03 remaining in the first half, Rutgers scored the game’s next 16 points to take a 24-7 advantage with just under six minutes to play in the opening stanza. During the run, junior Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ) scored 10 points on her way to a game-high 20-point effort. Additionally, the Scarlet Knights held Georgetown without a field goal for 12 minutes (15:03-3:03) as they took a 30-17 lead into the locker room.
The Hoyas made a lay-up to open play in the second half, cutting the deficit to 11 points (30-19), but Rutgers squashed any hopes of a comeback with a 16-4 run that saw its lead balloon to 23 points (46-23) with 10:35 to play.
Rutgers received balanced scoring, as Campbell (20 points, seven rebounds) and freshmen Matee Ajavon (Newark, NJ) (18 points, 8-for-11 shooting) led the way. Essence Carson (Paterson, NJ) and Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) each contributed eight points. In 23 minutes, senior Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) had six points and a team-high four assists.
Rutgers limited Georgetown to just 12 field goals and 22.6 percent shooting. Bethany Leueur was the only Hoya to reach double figures (10 points). The 33 points is the lowest that RU has given up since a 54-29 victory over Vermont on Nov. 25, 2000.
Tonight’s game can be seen on a tape-delayed basis on Patriot Media on Saturday, Jan. 15, at 9:00 p.m. and Monday, Jan. 17, at 9:30 p.m.
Rutgers returns to action on Sunday, Jan. 16, when it travels to Columbus, OH, to face fifth-ranked Ohio State as part of the BIG EAST/Big Ten Challenge at 3:00 p.m. The game can be seen live on ESPN2.
