Ajavon Named BIG EAST Freshman of the Week

PISCATAWAY, NJ - Rutgers' Matee Ajavon (Newark, NJ) has been named the BIG EAST Conference Women's Basketball Freshman of the Week for the second time this season, the league office has announced.
Ajavon, a 5-8 guard, helped lead Rutgers to a pair of upset victories against top-10 teams last week. In a 65-51 win against No. 8/8 Tennessee Dec. 29, Ajavon came off the bench to score a game-high 20 points, adding four rebounds and three assists in 33 minutes. In RU's 51-47 upset victory at No. 4/3 Texas Jan. 2, she scored a game-high 16 points in 31 minutes off the bench and added four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Ajavon capped a furious Rutgers rally with her 18-footer at the 3:53 mark to even the game at 47-47. She then put the Scarlet Knights ahead for good with 1:14 on the clock, converting a left-side drive to give RU a 49-47 advantage.
This marks the second time this season Ajavon has been singled out as the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week (Dec. 18).
No. 14 Rutgers (8-2), coming off back-to-back top-10 victories for just the second time in school history, will try to make it three in a row when the Scarlet Knights host No. 1/1 LSU Wednesday, Jan. 5, at 7:30 p.m. The game will be carried on WCTC 1450 AM and WRSU 88.7 FM.
