PISCATAWAY, NJ - Rutgers' Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) has been named the BIG EAST Conference Women's Basketball Co-Player of the Week, the league office announced Jan. 31.
A 5-9 senior guard, Pondexter averaged 21.5 points, 5.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game in leading Rutgers to a pair of victories the previous week. In a 71-60 win at No. 14/13 Boston College Jan. 26, she poured in a game-high and season-high 27 points on 11-for-17 (.647) shooting, including a 4-for-6 (.667) effort from behind the three-point line. Pondexter added four assists and three steals in the victory. Against West Virginia Jan. 30, she contributed 16 points, six assists and five rebounds, making three of five (.600) three-pointers, in a 70-49 triumph.
It marked the third time during her career that Pondexter has been named the BIG EAST Player of the Week (Dec. 15, 2003, and Jan. 5, 2004), and the eighth time she has been singled out for a conference weekly honor - she was five times named the BIG EAST Rookie of the Week during the 2002-2003 season. Pondexter shared the Jan. 31 award with Seton Hall's Ashley Bush.
Pondexter is the third Scarlet Knight to earn weekly BIG EAST honors this season. Matee Ajavon (Newark, NJ) has been named the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week three times (Dec. 20, Jan. 3, Jan. 17), and Essence Carson (Paterson, NJ) was the BIG EAST Freshman of the Week Jan. 10.
No. 8 Rutgers (15-4, 6-1 BIG EAST) will travel to Hartford, CT, to face No. 9 Connecticut Thursday, Feb. 3, at 7:00 p.m. The game will be shown on CSTV, and will be carried on WCTC 1450 AM, WMTR 1250 AM and WRSU 88.7 FM.
