Pondexter Named MBWA Player of the Week

PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers’ Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) has been named the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Division I Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the group announced Jan. 31. Earlier today, Pondexter also was named the BIG EAST Conference Co-Player of the Week.
A 5-9 senior guard, Pondexter averaged 21.5 points, 5.0 assists and 3.5 rebounds per game in leading Rutgers to a pair of victories the previous week. In a 71-60 win at No. 14/13 Boston College Jan. 26, she poured in a game-high and season-high 27 points on 11-for-17 (.647) shooting, including a 4-for-6 (.667) effort from behind the three-point line. Pondexter added four assists and three steals in the victory. Against West Virginia Jan. 30, she contributed 16 points, six assists and five rebounds, making three of five (.600) three-pointers, in a 70-49 triumph.
It marked the second time this season that a Scarlet Knight was named the MBWA Player of the Week. Junior Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ) earned the same award Jan. 10.
No. 7 Rutgers (15-4, 6-1 BIG EAST) will travel to Hartford, CT, to face No. 11 Connecticut Thursday, Feb. 3, at 7:00 p.m. The game will be shown on CSTV, and will be carried on WCTC 1450 AM, WMTR 1250 AM and WRSU 88.7 FM.
