Rutgers Defeats Providence in BIG EAST Opener 58-45

Rutgers, playing its third game in four days, was sluggish to start the contest as the Friars led by as many as eight points (31-23, 1:03) in the first half, and carried a 31-25 advantage into the locker room.
The Scarlet Knights showed more energy to start the second stanza, retaking the lead 4:23 into the half (36-35). The two teams traded baskets until the
7:53 mark, when RU went on a 7-0 run, re-establishing control of the game with a 51-42 advantage with 3:30 to play.
Senior Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ) led the way for RU, making 9 of 15
(.600) field goals for a season-best 21 points while adding six rebounds.
Fifth-year senior Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) contributed 16 points and five rebounds, while sophomore Essence Carson (Paterson, NJ) added 11 tallies, four assists and a team-best eight rebounds. Freshman Sammeika Thrash (Birmingham, AL) had her best outing as a collegian, chipping in six rebounds, six points, two assists and two steals in 30 minutes.
The Scarlet Knights will return to Piscataway, hosting Old Dominion Friday, Dec. 9, at 7:30 p.m. The game will be carried on WCTC 1450 AM and WRSU 88.7 FM, and a live feed of the radio broadcast, as well as live statistics, will be available on www.scarletknights.com.
