No. 10/10 Rutgers Gets Past Syracuse 64-54

SYRACUSE, NY – The No. 10/10 Rutgers women’s basketball team (19-5, 10-2 BIG EAST) scored the game’s final 10 points to get past Syracuse (11-13, 3-10 BIG EAST) 64-54 Feb. 16.
The Orange led by as many as four (48-44, 10:02) in the second half, but RU forced four ties in the game’s next seven minutes. With the score knotted at 54-54 with 3:11 on the clock, senior Chelsea Newton (Monroe, LA) made a free throw at the 2:26 mark to nudge Rutgers ahead 55-54, and classmate Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) scored on a right-side drive and drained a three-pointer from the top of the key to give the Scarlet Knights a 60-54 advantage with 58 seconds to play. Pondexter then made a pair of free throws, followed by a Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ) layup, for the final
64-54 score.
Rutgers raced out to a 13-6 lead in the game’s first 6:22, but Syracuse steadily chipped away at that advantage, and a pair of free throws with 25 seconds remaining sent the teams into the locker room deadlocked at 31-31.
Pondexter scored a game-high 25 points on 9-for-12 (.750) shooting, including a 3-for-4 (.750) effort from three-point range. Freshman Matee Ajavon (Newark, NJ) added 12 tallies. Senior Rebecca Richman (Bronx, NY) had her best game of the season in her third start of the year, producing season bests of eight points, 10 rebounds and four steals in 33 minutes.
With the victory, the Scarlet Knights snapped a two-game losing streak at Manley Field House.
