Pondexter Named Lieberman Finalist

PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers’ Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) has been named on of 10 candidates for the Nancy Lieberman Award, given annually to the nation’s top collegiate female point guard.
Pondexter, who has been a Lieberman candidate each of the last three years, leads the Scarlet Knights with 13.4 points per game this season, and is adding 3.3 rebounds, 2.9 assists and 1.8 steals per contest. A candidate for the Naismith National Player-of-the-Year Award, the Wooden Women’s Award, the State Farm Wade Trophy and the Bayer Advantage Senior CLASS Award, she was a preseason first-team all-BIG EAST selection this fall.
Pondexter averaged 17.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.8 steals per game for the Scarlet Knights last season, earning All-America honors from the Associated Press (third team), Full Court Press (third team) and Kodak/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (honorable mention). A candidate for three national player-of-the-year awards (Women’s Wooden Award, State Farm Wade Trophy and Naismith) as well as the Nancy Lieberman Award last year, she also was named to the 2004 Kodak/WBCA All-Region 1 Team, was unanimously selected to the All-BIG EAST First Team, and earned a spot on the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team after averaging a tourney-best 23.3 points per game in leading RU to a runner-up finish.
