PROVIDENCE, RI – Led by singles victories from Katrina Elder-Bush (Boston, MA), Lauren Edelschein (Medford Lakes, NJ), Alina Balasa (East Brunswick, NJ), Anela Dujsic (Mississauga, Ontario) and Helen Magomedova (Brooklyn, NY), the Rutgers women’s tennis team opened its 2005 fall schedule with a 5-2 victory over Providence.
Elder-Bush, a freshmen, led things off with a 6-1, 6-2 win over Sara Bitetti at first singles. The Friars picked up a point when Jill Markowitz (Forest Hills, NY) was forced to default while leading 5-4 against Molly Gillbride at second singles.
Edelschein got the Scarlet Knights (1-0, 1-0 BIG EAST) back on track with a 6-0, 6-1 triumph at third singles, and Dujsic, Balasa and Magomedova followed with straight-set wins at fourth, fifth and sixth singles, respectively.
In the only doubles match that was played, Dujsic and Elder-Bush earned an 8-3 victory over Batetti and Lindsay Christenson. Providence won the team doubles point because the final two matches were not played.
“It was a good performance for us to kick off the season,” said head coach Ben Bucca. “I’m hopeful this will give us a lot of momentum heading into a tough match with regionally-ranked Boston University.”
