Pondexter Named to Wooden Award Voting Ballot
Mar 10 | Women's Basketball
PISCATAWAY, NJ - Rutgers' Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) is one of 17 student-athletes to be named to the official voting ballot for the 2004-2005 Wooden Women's Award, given to the national player of the year.
Pondexter, a 5-9 senior guard, also was a member of the preseason watch lists for the Wade Trophy and Senior CLASS Award, was named a midseason candidate for the Naismith National Player-of-the-Year Award and a candidate for the Nancy Lieberman Award (top point guard). She is averaging 13.1 points, 3.3 rebounds and 3.1 assists per game this season, posting 15 double-digit scoring efforts in her 23 appearances. She was named to the 2004-2005 BIG EAST All-First Team and All-Tournament Team.
Pondexter averaged 17.9 points, 4.6 rebounds, 4.3 assists and 1.8 steals per game for the Scarlet Knights last season, earning All-America honors from the Associated Press (third team), Full Court Press (third team) and Kodak/Women's Basketball Coaches Association (honorable mention). A finalist for three national player-of-the-year awards (Women's Wooden Award, State Farm Wade Trophy and Naismith) as well as the Nancy Lieberman Award (top point guard) last year, she also was named to the 2004 Kodak/WBCA All-Region 1 Team, was unanimously selected to the All-BIG EAST First Team, and earned a spot on the BIG EAST All-Tournament Team after averaging a tourney-best 23.3 points per game in leading RU to a runner-up finish.
A panel of more than 200 voters will narrow the list from the current 17 candidates to five finalists, who will be honored April 9 in Los Angeles. The male and female Wooden Award winners will be announced April 9 during a CBS broadcast at 1:00 p.m.
No. 9/9 Rutgers (25-6, 14-2 BIG EAST) won the outright BIG EAST regular-season title and finished as the runner-up at the BIG EAST Tournament. The Scarlet Knights now await the announcement of the 64-team field for the NCAA Tournament, which will be unveiled Sunday, March 13, at 5:00 p.m. on ESPN. Fans are invited to join the Scarlet Knights and watch the Selection Show at the Busch Campus Student Center.
