Pondexter Named to Kodak/WBCA All-Region 1 Team
Mar 14 | Women's Basketball
PISCATAWAY, NJ – Rutgers’ Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) has been named to the Kodak/Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) All-Region 1 Team for the third time during her career (2003-2005).
Pondexter, a 5-9 senior guard, is a candidate for three national player-of-the-year awards (Naismith, State Farm Wade Trophy, Wooden Women’s Award) as well as the Nancy Lieberman Award (top point guard) and Bayer Advantage Senior CLASS Award. She also was named to the 2004-2005 BIG EAST All-First Team and All-Tournament Team.
Pondexter, who is averaging 13.1 points and 3.3 rebounds per game, has played in 23 contests this season, making five starts. She has registered 15 double-digit scoring efforts (three 20+ points), and is shooting 41.5 (22-53) percent from three-point range this season. She was named the BIG EAST Co-Player of the Week and the Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Player of the Week Jan. 31, and the BIG EAST Player of the Week Feb. 21. Last winter, she was named to the Associated Press and Full Court Press All-America Third Teams, and was an honorable mention Kodak All-American. A finalist for all three major national player-of-the-year awards (Naismith, State Farm Wade Trophy, Wooden Women’s Award), as well as the Nancy Lieberman Award, she earned her second first-team all-BIG EAST certificate in 2004.
Pondexter was one of six members of the All-Region 1 Team. The 48 total finalists are now in the running for selection to the 10-member Kodak/WBCA All-America Team.
The No. 9/10 Rutgers women’s basketball team (25-6, 14-2 BIG EAST) will begin the road to Indianapolis by taking on Hartford (22-8, 13-5 America East) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament Sunday, March 20, in Storrs, CT. The third-seeded Scarlet Knights will face the 14th-seeded Hawks at Gampel Pavilion (10,167) at approximately 2:30 p.m. The game will be shown on ESPN on a regional basis. It will be carried live on WCTC 1450 AM, WMTR 1250 AM and WRSU 88.7 FM. A live stream of the radio broadcast will be offered on www.scarletknights.com.
