Rutgers Softball Drops Two at Cavalier Classic

CHARLOTTESVILLE, VA – The Rutgers University softball team (0-13) fell to East Carolina 16-8 and Toledo 18-3 on the first day of competition at the Cavalier Classic on Friday, March 18.
In game one, the Scarlet Knights responded to a five-run first inning from ECU, by scoring four runs in both the third and fourth innings, but a late surge by the Pirates prove to much for RU. Senior Helen Smith (Tucson, AZ) finished the game 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI, while seniors Jenny Card (Miami, FL) and Stephanie Johannsen (Penn Valley, CA) each went 1-for-2 with two runs batted in.
In the night cap, Smith continued her hitting streak with a solo homerun to rightfield in the bottom of the seventh inning. She ended the game 3-for-4 with a double, and two runs scored, followed by freshman Christine Royland (Westwood, NJ), who went 2-for-4 with a triple and a run scored.
The Scarlet Knights will return to the field on Saturday, March 19, to take on host Virginia at 1:00 p.m. and Bowling Green at 3:00 p.m.
