Rutgers Softball Swept By Monmouth

PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers University softball team (3-35) dropped a pair of games to Monmouth (24-11) on Wednesday, April 20, falling 17-7 in game one and 8-7 in game two at the RU Softball Complex.
In game one, Monmouth kicked things off with a three-run inning in the first, including a two-run homerun by the Hawk’s Heather Gordon.
RU got on the board in the second when freshmen Lauren Tardiff (Manchester, NJ) and Hilary King (Canal Winchester, OH) singled to start the inning. The pair scored on senior Marisa Orsogna’s (Edison, NJ) double to centerfield to make the score 3-2.
The Hawks added two runs in both the third and fourth innings to extend their lead 7-2.
Rutgers rallied in the fourth, behind a leadoff walk from Tardiff, a single through the right side by freshman Mallory Miller (Anaheim, CA) and King’s single to centerfield to load the bases. Orsogna followed with a base clearing double to left-center, driving in three runs.
The Scarlet Knights continued to close the gap, as senior Helen Smith (Tuscon, AZ) led off the fifth with a solo homerun to left-center, to make the score 8-6.
Monmouth pulled away in the sixth, scoring four runs on back-to-back homeruns by Jessica Christ and Kara O’Dell and a two-run homerun from Lori Padgett.
In the seventh, Smith put RU on the board again with a solo shot to straight-away center, picking up her second homerun of the game and sixth on the season.
Senior Lindsay Creaney (Atco, NJ) took the loss (0-6) in game one, going 4.0 innings, allowing five earned runs on eight hits, while junior Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) pitched in relief, giving up nine run on nine hits in 3.0 innings of action. Heather Gordon pitched a complete game for the Hawks (8-5), allowing nine hits and six runs on three strikeouts.
Smith finished 3-for-4 with two RBI, while Orsogna was 2-for-3 with five runs batted in.
In the night cap, the Hawk’s Gina Mignogna started the third inning with a single through the left side. Mignogna stole second then advanced to third on a ground out, before eventually scoring the game’s first run on a wild pitch.
Freshman Jessica Cien (Chula Vista, CA) entered the game in the third to pinch run for sophomore Kristin Madoch (Glenview, IL), who singled to start the inning. In the next at bat, freshman Xaymara Rodriguez (Paterson, NJ) laid down a sac bunt, advancing Cien to second, while Smith earned a walk to put runners on first and second for RU.
Freshman Christine Royland (Westwood, NJ) helped the Scarlet Knights take a 2-1 lead with a two-run double down the left-field line, scoring Cien and Smith.
Monmouth added three more runs over the next two innings to regain the lead at 4-2, before the Scarlet Knights answered in the bottom of the fifth.
With bases loaded, Miller doubled to left-center, as three runs came in to score and give Rutgers a 5-4 advantage.
RU increased its lead, 7-4 in the sixth when sophomore Maggie Geraldi (Russell, IL) led off the inning with her first collegiate homerun, a shot to left-center. Smith tacked on another run with an RBI double to right-field, plating Madoch, who walked in her at bat.
In the seventh, Monmouth put together a four-run inning to come from behind and claim the 8-7 victory.
Senior Alicia Piniat (Scotch Plains, NJ) suffered the loss (1-5), allowing 10 hits on three strikeouts in 7.0 innings of work, while the Hawk’s Danielle Ellement earned the win (7-1), giving up two runs on five hits in 2.0 innings.
Rutgers will embark on a three-opponent road trip beginning with BIG EAST foes Boston College on Saturday, April 23 and Syracuse on Sunday, April 24, before taking on Delaware on Tuesday, April 26.
