Delaware Tops Rutgers Softball in Doubleheader

NEWARK, DE – The Rutgers University softball team (3-39) concluded its three-opponent road trip Tuesday, falling to the University of Delaware (24-10) by scores of 6-1 and 8-0.
The Blue Hens struck first in game one as they opened things up with a four-run inning in the first.
In the third, freshman Xaymara Rodriguez (Paterson, NJ) hit a leadoff triple to right-center and later scored on an error by Delaware’s Michelle Plant, cutting the score to 4-1.
Delaware added another run in both the third and fourth innings to take a 6-1 advantage.
Senior Helen Smith (Tucson, AZ) got the start for Rutgers, going 3.0 innings and giving up six runs (two earned) on seven hits, while freshman Christine Rabadan (Washington Twp., NJ) made her first appearance in the pitching circle, giving up just one hit on two strikeouts in 3.0 scoreless innings. Delaware’s Carolynn Sloat picked up the win, allowing one run on four hits in 6.0 innings of action.
In game two, the Scarlet Knights fell behind early as the Blue Hens jumped out to a 5-0 lead after the second inning.
RU was unable to rally back from the five run deficit, as Delaware pulled away with the 8-0 five-inning victory.
Junior Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) took the loss (0-11), pitching 3.1 innings, allowing nine hits and eight runs (five earned). Jenn Joseph got the win (9-10), giving up zero hits in 3.0 innings.
The Scarlet Knights will return to the RU Softball Complex for a doubleheader against Fairleigh Dickinson on Thursday, April 28, at 3:00 p.m.
