RU Softball Ends Season with Doubleheader Loss to Notre Dame
May 07 | Softball
PISCATAWAY, NJ – The Rutgers University softball team (5-43, 1-15 BIG EAST) dropped a pair of games to Notre Dame (41-11, 16-2 BIG EAST) Saturday, May 7, at the RU Softball Complex in the Scarlet Knights’ final competition of the season. The Fighting Irish earned an 11-0 victory in game one, and a 7-1 win in the nightcap.
Notre Dame got on the scoreboard first with a run in opening inning of the doubleheader. Two singles, a sacrifice bunt and a sacrifice fly netted the Irish an early 1-0 advantage. The Irish put the game away with a six-run fifth. The big hit of the inning came off the bat of Meagan Ruthrauff, who plated three runs with a double to right-center field. Notre Dame finished the scoring with a four-run seventh, highlighted by a two-run home run from Stephanie Brown.
Freshman Christine Rabadan (Washington Twp., NJ) threw the first two innings, allowing a run and three hits in the loss (0-1). Junior Christina Gillman (Valencia, CA) threw 2.0 innings, allowing three runs, two of which were earned, and was replaced by Rabadan in the fifth. Rabadan gave up three runs in a third of an inning. Senior Lindsay Creaney (Atco, NJ) pitched the final 2.2 innings and was charged with four unearned runs.
Steffany Stenglein (20-5) faced two batters over the minimum, allowing just one hit while striking out 12 Scarlet Knights in five innings of work. Kenya Fuemmeler came on in relief, scattering two hits in the final two innings.
In game two, Notre Dame jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the second, thanks to a leadoff home run from Carrie Wisen. Back-to-back-to-back RBI singles from Megan Ciolli, Ruthrauff and Wisen helped extend the Fighting Irish lead to 4-0 in the third. Ruthrauff and Wisen’s consecutive doubles made the Notre Dame lead 6-0 in the fifth inning.
Rutgers got on the scoreboard with a run in the sixth. Sophomore Kristen Madoch (Glenview, IL) led off with a single, and was lifted for pinch runner Lauren Tardiff (Manchester, NJ). She scored two batters later when senior Helen Smith (Tucson, AZ) laced a double to left-center field.
Gillman allowed five hits and four runs in 2.2 innings (1-14). Rabadan gave up two runs on five hits in 1.1 innings. Senior Alicia Piniat (Scotch Plains, NJ) was charged with two hits and one run in two innings on the mound. Gillman re-entered the game and recorded the final three outs.
Heather Booth scattered four hits in the complete-game victory (19-6), allowing one run while striking out 11 batters.
