Campbell Lifts No. 8/8 Rutgers Past Cincinnati 64-51

CINCINNATI, OH - Senior Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ) matched her season high with 21 points, leading No. 8/8 Rutgers (10-1, 2-0 BIG EAST) to a 64-51 victory at Cincinnati (10-2, 0-1 BIG EAST) Jan. 3.
Rutgers, tied at 8-8 less than four minutes into the contest, scored seven unanswered points to seemingly take control of the contest. But, the Bearcats, playing their first-ever BIG EAST Conference game, continued to fight. Cincinnati took a 33-28 lead into the locker room, and led by five (39-34) with 15:07 remaining in the contest.
The Bearcats had their way inside in the first 20 minutes, and those close shots helped UC shoot 57.1 (16-28) percent from the field in the first half.
Cincinnati also turned 10 Rutgers turnovers into 17 points, and outscored the Scarlet Knights 10-2 on the break.
But, Rutgers gathered itself in the second half, outscoring the Bearcats
36-18 after the intermission. A 12-2 run turned a 39-34 deficit into a
46-41 advantage, as RU pounded the ball inside to Campbell and redshirt senior Mariota Theodoris (Riviera Beach, FL). Rutgers shot 50.0 (12-24) percent from the floor in the second half, owned an 11-5 advantage on turnovers and held UC to just six field goals (6-24, .250).
Campbell made eight of 10 (.800) field goals for her game-high 21 points, adding six rebounds and four steals. Theodoris chipped in seven points, eight rebounds and a career-best three blocked shots, while fifth-year senior Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) added 16 points and a team-best four assists.
Sophomore Matee Ajavon (Newark, NJ) had nine points and three steals, while senior Courtney Locke (San Marcos, TX) contributed five points in 21 steady minutes, as RU outscored UC in bench points, 35-17.
The Scarlet Knights will finish their Midwest trip Saturday, Jan. 7, at Michigan State. The game will be shown live on CBS at 12:00 p.m., and will be carried on WRSU 88.7 FM. A live stream of the radio broadcast, as well as live statistics, will be available via www.scarletknights.com.
