FLUSHING, N.Y. - The Rutgers women's tennis team competed at the United States Tennis Association (USTA) Invitational last weekend at the U.S. National Tennis Center in Flushing, N.Y. Amongst eight of the country's top teams, the Scarlet Knights held their own, winning four out of six doubles matches between the "A" and "B" brackets.
"It was a great opportunity for us to play against some of the top teams in college tennis at arguably one of the best outdoor facilities in the world," said head coach Ben Bucca.
In the "B" doubles bracket, Katrina Elder-Bush (Boston, Mass.) and Anela Dujsic (Mississauga, Ontario) rebounded from a tiebreak-loss in the first round, winning their second match over St. John's Ira AleksovaA and Lauren Leo, 8-4. In its final match of the tournament, the duo posted another win, defeating Army's Kristin Beehler and Bridie Burke, 8-4.
Katherine Arlak (Leonia, N.J.) and Dana Gordon-Hartman (Margate, N.J.) went 1-1 in the "A" doubles draw, posting an 8-6 win over Army's Christine Limsiaco and Jessica Shurtz following a first round loss to third-seeded Britney Larson and Jennifer Stevens of Virginia.
In singles, Arlak led the team, finishing 2-1 on the weekend in the "B" singles draw. After dropping her first round match, Arklak used a second-set tiebreaker to defeat Princeton's Blakely Ashley, 6-4, 7-6 (0). In her final match of the weekend, Arlak won in a third-set replacing tiebreaker over Brown's Sara Mansur, 3-6, 7-5 1-0 (1).
"Katherine played extremely well this weekend," Bucca said. "I'm very pleased with how she's played this fall and very happy for her as she's having success so early in her freshman year."
In the "C" singles bracket, Dujsic picked up a win against the Red Storm's Aleksova, 6-3, 6-2.
Rutgers will travel to Hanover, N.H. to compete in the ITA Regional Tournament at Dartmouth University from Friday, Oct. 20, to Monday, Oct. 23.
