Pondexter Reaches Milestone in 54-41 Win at West Virginia
Feb 10 | Women's Basketball
MORGANTOWN, WV - No. 8/8 Rutgers kept its BIG EAST Conference record perfect, improving to 19-3 overall and 11-0 in league play with a 54-41 victory at West Virginia (12-10, 4-7 BIG EAST) Feb. 10.
With 6:41 remaining in the contest, fifth-year senior Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) became the second player in Rutgers history to score 2,000 career points when she drained a 16-footer on the right wing. Pondexter, who only trails Sue Wicks (2,655, 1984-88) on the all-time scoring list, now has 2,008 points.
Once again, RU seized early control of the game thanks to a scoring run, this one a 14-0 spurt that transformed a one-point game (6-5, 16:34) into a 15-point cushion (20-5, 8:13). The Scarlet Knights held the Mountaineers without a field goal for 11:22, eventually leading by 13 (22-9) with 6:18 remaining in the half.
But, back-to-back threes ignited a 16-0 run for WVU, and the two teams entered the locker room tied at 22-22. The Mountaineers briefly took a one-point lead (28-27) four minutes into the second stanza, but RU eventually scored 10 answered points later in the period to put the game out of reach.
Rutgers, which actually shot the ball better from three-point range (6-13,
.462) than it did from inside the arc (12-37, .324), outrebounded West Virginia 40-32 and turned 18 Mountaineer turnovers into 16 points.
Pondexter led the way for the Scarlet Knights, scoring 15 of her 22 points in the second half while dishing out a game-best four assists. Sophomore Essence Carson (Paterson, NJ) notched her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 10 rebounds, while classmate Matee Ajavon (Newark, NJ) collected eight points and a career-high six steals.
RU will return home to face Villanova Tuesday, Feb. 14, at 7:30 p.m. The game will be shown on a tape-delayed basis on Patriot cable systems, and will be carried live on WCTC 1450 AM, WMTR 1250 AM and WRSU 88.7 FM. A live stream of the audio, as well as live statistics, will be available via www.scarletknights.com.
