Rutgers Defeats Syracuse, 60-43, for Ninth-Straight Win
Feb 19 | Women's Basketball
PISCATAWAY, NJ - Michelle Campbell (Princeton, NJ) and Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) each scored 13 points to help No. 7/8 Rutgers (21-3, 13-0 BIG EAST) beat Syracuse (9-15, 2-11 BIG EAST) 60-43 on Sunday for its ninth straight win. Campbell also scored her 1,000th career point, becoming the 24th Rutgers player to achieve the milestone.
Matee Ajavon (Newark, NJ) added 11 points while Essence Carson (Paterson, NJ) and Kia Vaughn (Bronx, NY) added 10 for Rutgers, which has won 21 straight conference games dating back to last season. It was the first time this season all five starters scored in double figures for Rutgers.
The Scarlet Knights took an 11-2 lead and never looked back as Syracuse was overwhelmed by the defensive pressure of the Scarlet Knights, which resulted in 16 turnovers. The Orange made just eight field goals in the first half, and 19 of RU’s 33 points came directly off turnovers. Rutgers opened a 15-point lead with 6:36 left in the first half and had a double-digit lead the rest of the game.
Vaughn earned the starting nod and responded by scoring six points in the first eight minutes. Overall, Rutgers’ frontline of Vaughn and Campbell combined for 23 points, 17 rebounds and one block. In the backcourt, Ajavon tied her career high with six steals to go with her 11 points and six assists.
Ahead 33-20 at halftime, jumpers by Pondexter and Campbell extended the lead to 17 points (37-20) at the 16:29 mark and the Scarlet Knights never looked back.
Jenny Eckhart was the only Syracuse player to score in double figures (11 points) as the Orange shot just 39.5 percent for the game. Rutgers outrebounded the Orange 38-25, including an 18-8 advantage on the offensive glass.
The Scarlet Knights go on the road to Marquette and Pittsburgh this week, before hosting No. 8/6 Connecticut next Monday night in the regular-season finale.
