Rutgers Rolls Past Marquette 71-50

MILWAUKEE, WI - No. 7/8 Rutgers (22-3, 14-0 BIG EAST) pulled away from Marquette (17-8, 8-6 BIG EAST) for a 71-50 victory Feb. 22 in Milwaukee. The win was the 10th straight overall for the Scarlet Knights, and the 22nd consecutive victory in BIG EAST regular-season play.
RU led 33-24 at the break, but scored the first five points of the second half and later engineered an 11-0 run to build a 23-point bulge (55-32) with less than nine minutes to play, putting the game out of reach.
The Scarlet Knights shot 51.9 (28-54) percent from the field and 50.0 (5-10) percent from beyond the arc in the victory, turning the ball over just seven times against the Golden Eagles. Fifth-year senior Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) made seven of her 10 (.700) attempts from the field for a game-high 20 points, followed closely by Matee Ajavon (Newark, NJ), who had 18 points and nine assists with just one turnover. Sophomore Essence Carson (Paterson, NJ) posted 12 tallies, while freshman Kia Vaughn (Bronx, NY) contributed nine points and a game-best seven rebounds.
Rutgers, fourth nationally in scoring defense (51.8 ppg), held Marquette to its lowest point total of the season. It also marked the 12th-straight game RU has held its opponent to fewer than 60 tallies.
