Vaughn Named to MBWA Honor Roll

PISCATAWAY, NJ - Rutgers freshman Kia Vaughn (Bronx, NY) has been named to the PrestoSports/Metropolitan Basketball Writers Association (MBWA) Honor Roll, the group announced Feb. 6.
The 6-4 center helped lead RU to a pair of victories against top-25 competition last week, thanks to her play on both ends of the floor. Vaughn posted 15 points, five rebounds and four blocked shots in the 61-51 victory against No. 25/25 St. John’s Feb. 1, but was also crucial on the defensive end, helping to hold Red Storm forward Angela Clark to one of her worst career outings against Rutgers (4-15 FG, 10 points, four rebounds). In the
67-57 win against No. 13/11 DePaul Feb. 4, Vaughn posted game highs of nine rebounds and seven blocked shots. When matched up against Blue Demon All-American Khara Smith, Vaughn held the DePaul forward to 2-of-8 (.250) shooting while blocking four of her attempts. Smith finished with just 13 points and six rebounds, well below her season averages (18.2 ppg, 10.8 rpg).
Vaughn is the second Scarlet Knight to be recognized by the MBWA this season. Fifth-year senior guard Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, IL) was named the Player of the Week Jan. 16, and earned a spot on the Honor Roll three times (Jan. 9, Jan. 23, Jan. 30).
No. 8/9 Rutgers (17-3, 9-0 BIG EAST) will finish a seven-day stretch featuring three ranked opponents when RU travels to Storrs, CT, to face No.
4/3 Connecticut (21-2, 10-0 BIG EAST). The match-up, which will feature the BIG EAST Conference’s only two undefeated teams, will tipoff at 8:00 p.m. on Tuesday, Feb. 7, at Gampel Pavilion (10,167).
The game will be shown on CSTV. Ann Schatz and Debbie Antonelli will call the action. The game will be carried live on the Rutgers Radio Network (WCTC 1450 AM), as well as on Rutgers’ student station, WRSU 88.7 FM.
