Rutgers Women's Tennis Defeats Army, 5-2

WEST POINT, NY - The Rutgers women’s tennis team (8-5) won all three doubles matches to earn an impressive 5-2 victory over Army on Wednesday afternoon in West Point, NY.
Lauren Edelschein (Medford Lakes, NJ) and Jill Markowitz (Forest Hills, NY) began the match with an 8-4 victory at third doubles, followed by Alina Balasa (East Brunswick, NJ) and Dana Gordon (Margate, NJ) picking up a 8-5 triumph at first doubles. Ketevan Shmakova (Dover, NJ) and Katrina Elder-Bush completed the sweep with a hard-fought 8-7 (7-3) win at second doubles.
In the singles matches, Rutgers’ wins came from Elder-Bush (first singles, 6-4, 6-0), Shmakova (third singles, 6-3, 4-6, 10-7), Balasa (fourth singles, 7-5, 6-4) and Edelschein (sixth singles, 6-1, 6-4). Five of the six singles matches were decided in straight sets.
Rutgers’ win over Army was the Scarlet Knights’ first in the past three years, and the Scarlet Knights hope to build on their momentium when they travel to South Orange, NJ on Saturday for a key BIG EAST match against Seton Hall.
