PISCATAWAY, NJ - Julia Fielder, who has served for the past three seasons as the head volleyball coach at Upper Iowa University, has been named an assistant coach at Rutgers University, Scarlet Knight head coach Orlando Gonzalez announced today.
Fiedler had a highly-successful three-year stint at Upper Iowa in Fayette, IA, leading the program in its transition from NCAA Division III to Division II during the 2003 season.?? During her second year, the team received the American Volleyball Coaches Association (AVCA) Academic Award for having a cumulative team grade point average of 3.30, and last year she coached three all-Independent League players as her team broke the school record for single-season wins.
'Julia brings the same commitment and work ethic that I believe will make Rutgers volleyball successful,' said Gonzalez, who enters his first season as RU's full-time head coach in 2006. 'Her experience as a head coach gives her the insight on the multiple tasks required at this level.?? She understands the importance of technical training, organization, and good recruiting.?? Julia is competitive and knowledgeable about the direction I want the program to go and a promising coach for the future.?? Adding her to the staff will prove valuable on several fronts and we are fortunate to add her talents to the mission of Rutgers volleyball.'
Fielder prepared for her head coaching stint by working for four years (2000-2003) as an assistant at Alma College, where her responsibilities included recruiting, scheduling and scouting.?? The Alma team won two MIAA Conference championships during her four-year tenure, and she took over the head coaching responsibilities late in the 2001 season due to the birth of the head coach's child.
A club volleyball coach, Fielder led the Cobra Volleyball Club in West Union, IA, to 30 wins in 33 matches over two seasons.?? Her responsibilities included conducting tryouts, practice planning and on-court coaching.?? She began her coaching career as the junior varsity coach (2001-02) at Alma College, posting a 24-9 record.
Fielder graduated from Alma College in 2001 with a bachelor's degree in English with a minor in communication.??
