PISCATAWAY, NJ - Nicole Carter has been named an assistant coach with the Rutgers volleyball program, head coach Orlando Gonzalez has announced.
Most recently, Carter served as the volleyball and track and field (hurdles) assistant at her alma mater, New Mexico Highlands University, from 2003-2006. In addition, she served as the strength and conditioning coach for the volleyball and track and field programs from 2002-2006, all while finishing her master's degree and serving as a counseling intern in the West Las Vegas (NM) School District in 2005. Her responsibilities with the volleyball program included strength and conditioning, recruiting and academic support.
'Adding Nicole gives us a great complement of talents on our staff,' said Gonzalez. 'Her experience developing the athletes physically, as well as her counseling skills, gives us another quality coach and person to enhance the experience and mentorship of our student-athletes. These skills, combined with her recruiting experience in the western states, make Nicole a perfect fit to an outstanding staff capable of taking the program exactly where everyone wants to see it go.'
Carter also worked as an assistant varsity coach at West Las Vegas High School (2002-2004) and as the head coach of the U15s of the Cosmos (CA) Volleyball Club (1998). She spent the 2002-2003 academic year as a graduate assistant in the NMHU Reading Lab.
'I am very excited,' said Carter. 'I can't wait for the season to start. I am expecting big things for our team, as well as our coaching staff.'
Carter was the Athlete of the Year as a senior at Konawaena (HI) High School and won the state title in the 300-meter hurdles. Following a redshirt freshman year at Hawaii, she transferred to Foothill (CA) College in 1998, helping to lead her volleyball team to a third-place finish at the California Junior College State Championship and placing fourth in the 400-meter hurdles at the state meet. Carter finished her volleyball and track career at NMHU, earning first-team all-conference honors in volleyball in 2000 as her team reached the regional playoffs and posted a 22-7 record.
Carter earned an associate's degree from Foothill in 1999 and a bachelor's degree in human performance in sports/exercise science from NMHU in 2002. She completed a master's in counseling and guidance LPC (licensed professional counselor) at New Mexico Highlands in December of 2005.
Rutgers posted an 11-16 overall record and a 6-8 mark in BIG EAST play last season.
