PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Junior Heather Zurich (Montvale, N.J.) scored 10 of her team-high 18 points in the second half as Rutgers registered a 66-54 victory over DT3 on Thursday evening at the Louis Brown Athletic Center.
With an extended break between games, C. Vivian Stringer's squad enjoyed a post-exam contest against a team comprised of former collegiate players. Among the members of the DT3 squad were former Duke Blue Devil and current Indiana Fever member Alison Bales and former RU standout Mauri Horton.
The Scarlet Knights last game was on Dec. 12, a 53-48 win at Princeton. RU next plays on Dec. 30, entertaining Temple at 2:00 p.m. at the RAC. The game will be nationally televised on ESPNU.
In addition to Zurich, two other Scarlet Knights garnered double digits. Sophomore Brittany Ray (Bronx, N.Y.) had 15 points -including a 3-of-5 effort from long range- and freshman Khadijah Rushdan (Wilmington, Del.) added 13. Every player on the RU roster scored at least two points.
Rutgers jumped out to a 12-2 lead to start the contest following a three-pointer by Ray with 17:10 showing. DT3 erupted on a 22-8 run to take a four-point lead (24-20) on a jumper from former Temple Owl Fatima Maddox with 4:06 showing. The Scarlet Knights responded, scoring the last 13 points of the stanza to take a 33-24 advantage at intermission.
A fast break lay-up by Rushdan gave RU a 45-29 lead with 12:55 to play in the game. The Scarlet Knights built the deferential to the largest margin- 24 points (59-35) - after a lay-in by senior Katie Adams with 8:03 showing. DT2 would close to 11 on a 12-footer by Victoria Crawford, two of her game-high 24 points with less than three minutes to play. That would be as close as the former collegians would come.
Sophomore Myia McCurdy paced the team in rebounding with seven boards. Classmate Rashidat Juniad had six.
