PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers head football coach Greg Schiano announced today the Spring Football Award winners for the Scarlet Knights.
Rising junior linebacker Kevin Malast (Manchester, N.J.) won the Frank R. Burns Award, given to the player who displays extraordinary mental and physical toughness during spring practice. Rising sophomore wide receiver Kenny Britt (Bayonne, N.J.) was the recipient of the Mark Mills Second Effort Award, given to the Most Improved Offensive Player. Rising junior defensive tackle Pete Tverdov (Union, N.J.) earned the Douglas A. Smith Award for his efforts as the Most Improved Defensive Player.
All three players were part of last season's 11-2 squad that finished 12th in the final rankings and won the Texas Bowl with a 37-10 victory over Kansas State.

Britt made a splash as a true freshman, appearing in 11 games, including five starts. The New Jersey native recorded 29 receptions for 440 yards and two touchdowns. He returns in 2007 as Rutgers' leading receiver statistically in receptions and receiving yards.
Tverdov played both defensive end and defensive tackle in 2006, before moving full-time to defensive tackle this spring. He finished 2006 with four tackles.
The Scarlet Knights open the 2007 season Thursday, August 30 at Rutgers Stadium vs. Buffalo.
