Cappie Pondexter Leads Phoenix to WNBA Title

DETROIT, Mich. - Former Rutgers women's basketball standout Cappie Pondexter (Chicago, Ill.) has a championships to call her own as the Phoenix Mercury captured the 2007 WNBA Title on Sunday evening.
The Mercury defeated the defending champion Detroit Shock, 108-92, in the fifth and deciding game of the WNBA Finals at the Palace of Auburn Hills in front of a crowd of 22,076. Phoenix became the first road team to win a title away from home.
As ESPN broadcaster Linda Cohn noted after the game, "Pondexter set the tone for the game.' For her amazing efforts over the course of the five-game series, Pondexter was named the Most Valuable Player.
The 5-9 guard, in just her second season in the league, tallied 26 points in the final contest shooting 9-of-18 from the floor and was 7-for-8 from the free throw line. She dished 10 assists in the title game and added three rebounds.
Over the course of the entire playoffs (nine games), Pondexter averaged 23.8 points and 5.7 assists. The second-year player averaged 22 points and 5.6 assists in the five-game final series and was 25-of-30 from the charity stripe.
"This goes to the team. It's not just me. It's everybody," Pondexter said after receiving her MVP trophy.
