PISCATAWAY, N.J. - Rutgers women's basketball head coach C. Vivian Stringer has announced the addition of Kellindra Zachery to the 2007-08 roster.
"Kellindra is a physical player who gives us more depth and versatility in the post position," Stringer said. "She has been known to be an outstanding rebounder. We are happy to have another Shabazz player, who helped take her team to several state championships, join the program."
Zackery arrives in Piscataway after a one-year stay at the University of South Carolina. A native of Newark, the 5-11 forward played in 29 games for the Lady Gamecocks as a freshman. She averaged 4.2 points and 3.1 rebounds per game. Zackery exploded for 28 points and 11 rebounds versus North Carolina A&T, the fourth-highest single game total for a USC freshman and most points by any player in three seasons.
The 5-11 forward is no stranger to New Jersey basketball fans, having played scholastically at Malcom X Shabazz in Newark, N.J. Zackery was a two-time first-team all-state selection and helped to lead Shabazz to three state titles in four years. She averaged 12.6 points and 11.7 boards her senior season in leading Shabazz to a perfect 33-0 record that broke the mark for most wins ever for a New Jersey high school girls basketball team.
"I am happy to be able to come home and join the Scarlet Knights," Zackery said. "I am excited about the opportunity and also excited to be able to play closer to my family and friends."
Zackery is reuniting with former high school teammate and current Rutgers guard Matee Ajavon. She will sit out the 2007-08 season per NCAA transfer guidelines and will be classified as a sophomore with three years of eligibility remaining.
