Rutgers Wrestling Goes 1-1 in Home Doubleheader

NEW BRUNSWICK, N.J. - The Rutgers wrestling team, under the guidance of first-year head coach Scott Goodale, went 1-1 in non-conference action in a home doubleheader Friday at the College Ave. Gym, defeating Wagner 42-0 before falling to Lock Haven 22-16. Lock Haven went 2-0 in the three-team meet to improve to 5-1, while the Scarlet Knights are now 1-4. Wagner went 0-2 to fall to 0-6-1.
It was a tale of two schools, as Rutgers came into the match 14-0 all-time against Wagner and 0-3 all-time against Lock Haven. In the first match against the Seahawks, all 10 RU wrestlers were victorious. Ryan Jablonski (Norristown, Pa.) and Steve Adamcsik (Chester, N.J.) each won by technical fall, and Dan Hilt (Manalapan, N.J.) pinned Tyler Harmer at the 1:20 mark to give RU a quick 16-0 team lead. Jack Barrett (Metuchen, N.J.), Jamie Lijo (Stanhope, N.J.), McPaul Ogbonna (East Hanover, N.J.), Keith Dobish (Lodi, N.J.) and Lamar Brown (Red Bank, N.J.) all earned decisions against their opponents, while Matt Pletcher (Eastampton, N.J.) won by technical fall and DJ Russo (Netcong, N.J.) pinned John Graeffe at the 1:39 mark.
After Lock Haven made quick work of Wagner, winning handily 45-0, the Bald Eagles and the Scarlet Knights squared off in a tightly contested match. Hilt, Adamcsik, Chris Norrell (Phillipsbyrg, N.J.), Brown and Karim Mahmoud (Wallington, N.J.) all picked up victories but it wasn't enough as Lock Haven got pins from Matt Fittery and Landis Wright over Barrett and Pletcher, respectively, to give the Bald Eagles the win.
"That second match was a big one," said Goodale. "I thought we could have won both matches where we got pinned. But I am proud of the kids, they wrestled well against a good school in Lock Haven. Our guys wanted to win, they are upset that they lost, and I like that about them. The winning will come for us."
Rutgers next takes to the mat on Saturday, Jan. 5, when they travel to face EIWA conference foe Princeton. The match can be heard on TakeDown Radio.
