Zhang Falls in Fourth Round of ITA East Region Championships

PHILADELPHIA, Pa. – Sophomore Amy Zhang (Plano, Texas), seeded No. 17,fell to No. 3 seed Ragini Acharya of William & Mary Monday afternoon at the Levy Pavilion on the campus of the University of Pennsylvania.
Acharya, ranked 87th nationally, topped Zhang 6-2, 6-2 to advance to the quarterfinals. Zhang topped players from both Columbia and Maryland to advance to the round of 16.
“The competition was excellent at this tournament and I was very happy to go as far as I did,” said Zhang. “I thought I played pretty well and I feel confident about my game and where I stand. I know what I need to work on to improve. I am looking forward to building off this as I know there are many great players in the BIG EAST.”
Other RU participants in the tournament included freshman Maryana Milchutskey (Holmdel, N.J.), who lost in qualifying singles action, and the duo of Jennifer Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) and Leonora Slatnick (Austin, Texas), who fell in the main doubles draw.
“Amy played some very competitive and tough tennis,” said head coach Ben Bucca. “With every round she improved and even with this disappointing loss in the round of 16, I’m sure she’s pleased with her results.”
The Scarlet Knights will be off until their spring season starts on January 28 at Princeton.
