Wheeler, a 5-7 guard, was a first team 3A All-State selection the past two seasons for Parkway Academy in Miramar, Fla. A two-time Miami Herald Broward Class 1A-3A player of the year, she averaged 21points and eight assists helping lead Parkway to the Class 3A state championship last February. Rated 17th by collegehoopnet.com and 39th overall by Hoopgurlz, Wheeler is also rated the fifth-best point guard in the 2009 class. A participant at the Nike Skills Academy, the Florida product earned a No. 56 rating from Blue Star and was 68th on the All-Star Girls Report top players list. She plays club ball for Essence, the same squad which produced current Rutgers freshmen Chelsey Lee and April Sykes. Lee was also Wheeler’s teammate at Parkway.
“Erica is a quick, explosive guard with great ball-handling skills and can deliver the passes the way we need,” Stringer said. “She is a smart kid and player. Erica understands the work ethic that goes along with being a Scarlet Knight and has committed herself to it.”
