Rutgers Finishes 2-2 In Sprawl & Brawl

BINGHAMTON, N.Y.– In its first duals competition of 2008, the Rutgers wrestling team (2-2) split its four matches, Sunday at the Sprawl & Brawl in Binghamton, N.Y. Rutgers defeated Clarion 21-15 and Columbia 19-15 but fell to North Carolina, 33-3, and No. 14 Boise State, 25-13.
Facing Clarion in the second round, RU fell behind quickly as Matt Fusco (Belleville, N.J.) fell 7-3 at 125 and Brian Bollette (Newton, N.J.) dropped a tough 3-2 contest at 133. At 141-pounds, David Greenwald (Union, N.J.) put Rutgers on the board, pinning his opponent in 1:53. But Dave Seidenberg (Red Bank, N.J.) fell 6-0 at 149 and Scott Winston (Jackson, N.J.) dropped a tough 4-3 contest to the No. 17 ranked 157-pound wrestler, Hadley Harrison.
But the Scarlet Knights bounced back, as Matt Pletcher (Eastampton, N.J.), Mike Whalen (Lake Hiawatha, N.J.) and Keith Dobish (Lodi, N.J.) all won their bouts, at 165-pounds, 174-pounds and 184-pounds, respectively. Clarion regained the lead when Jamie Lucket defeated Karim Mahmoud (Wallington, N.J.),3-2 at 197, but DJ Russo (Netcong, N.J.) gave RU the win, pinning Quentis McCorkle in 3:17 in the heavyweight bout.
In the third round, Rutgers took on Ivy League foe Columbia. Mike Demarco (Lyndhurst, N.J.) and Bollete dropped their bouts, but Greenwald, Seidenberg, Winston, Matt Rigoglioso (Wayne, N.J.) and Pletcher all won consecutive matches to put RU on top. After Whalen dropped a tough 3-1 contest at 184, Mahmoud clinched the victory for the Scarlet Knights with a 7-3 win over Ryan Sougherland. In the heavyweight bout, Russo held the lead until a last second reversal gave No. 17 Ryan Flores the win.
Fusco was the lone winner in RU’s loss to North Carolina. In the Scarlet Knights’ match against No. 14 Boise State, Greenwald, Mahmoud and Russo all picked up victories.
Rutgers returns to action on Saturday, Nov. 29, when they travel to face No. 18 Indiana.
