Scarlet Knights Cruise to Perfect 6-0 Start
Feb 15 | Women's Tennis
PISCATAWAY, N.J. - The Rutgers University women's tennis team captured all six singles matches and all three doubles contests in a 7-0 BIG EAST victory over Villanova Friday afternoon at the RU Tennis Complex.
Rutgers (6-0, 2-0) is off to its best start since Ben Bucca was named head coach in 2003. Villanova falls to 3-3 overall and 0-1 in conference play.
"This was a great win for our team," Bucca said. "Once again Villanova was a team that beat us last year and with this convincing win, we have proven that this team has turned things around."
The Scarlet Knights dominated singles play, dropping only 11 games in the six victories. Senior Katrina Elder-Bush (Boston, Mass.) continued her amazing play, handling Carla Erskin 6-1, 6-1 at No. 1 singles, while Polina Zaretser (Brooklyn, N.Y.) topped Emily Urda 6-2, 6-0 at No 2. Freshman Amy Zhang (Plano, Texas) remained a perfect 6-0 in singles play with a 6-1, 6-0 win over Courtney Reed at the No. 3 spot. Sophomore's Katherine Arlak (Leonia, N.J.), Caitlin Baker (Altoona, Pa.), and Christine Tran (Centreville, Va.) rounded out singles play by each dropping only two games in their wins.
On the doubles side, Rutgers dropped only for games, while picking up all three wins and the double point. Elder-Bush and Tran highlighted the doubles play by improving to 5-0 on the year with an 8-1 victory over Courtney Reed and Daniella Phillis at the No. 2 spot.
The Scarlet Knights will return to the courts Saturday, Feb. 3 when they travel to Hanover, N.H. to take on Dartmouth.
