Rutgers Softball Falls to Radford, Postponed Against Indiana

CLEARWATER, Fla. - The Rutgers softball team (6-9) opened play at the USF Under Armour Showcase on Friday, March 14, in Clearwater, Fla. The Scarlet Knights dropped game one against Radford 11-0, while game two versus Indiana was postponed due to relentless thunder showers.
The Highlanders used a six-run first inning to jump out to an early lead over the Scarlet Knights. Rutgers collected six hits in the game, but was unable to overcome the deficit as Radford added five more scores in the fourth to earn the five-inning victory.
In game two, Rutgers seemed to reverse its fortune as the Scarlet Knights scored a run in the first inning on a RBI-triple to left field by freshman Mandy Craig (Manassas, Va.). Craig drove in junior Amanda Shaw (Yorba Linda, Calif.) who earned a walk to start the game.
The Scarlet Knights continued to threaten, loading the bases with a pair of walks and a hit batter, however, the game was postponed due to a steady rain shower. Play will resume on Saturday, March 15, with Rutgers holding its 1-0 lead, with the bases loaded and two outs.
As a result of the suspension in play, games will be shifted over the final two days of the tournament. On Saturday, Rutgers will complete its game against Indiana and then face UMass. The Scarlet Knights will then go up against FIU on Sunday, which was previously scheduled for Saturday, and close out tournament play with a game to be determined.
