Nina Montero Selected as Rutgers' Woman Of The Year

PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers women’s soccer standout defender Nina Montero (Vineland, N.J.) was selected as the school’s Woman of the Year, it was announced Tuesday by the New Jersey Association of Intercollegiate Athletics for Women (NJAIAW). Each school in the state of New Jersey names one female student-athlete as its NJAIAW Woman of the Year.
Montero was a two-time team captain. In 2008, she helped lead the team to a Sweet Sixteen appearance in the NCAA Tournament, where the Scarlet Knights fell at Stanford, 1-0. She was a key member of an RU defense that shut out 42 opponents over her four seasons. She recorded three goals and four assists during her career, including two assists her final campaign. She started all but four of her 74 career games.
A star in the classroom as well as on the field, she has a 3.95 GPA and earned BIG EAST Academic All-Star honors all four of her years. In 2006 she was named to the ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District Second Team, and was a two-time ESPN The Magazine Academic All-District First Team honoree. She was also a four-time Rutgers Scholar-Athlete award winner.
The award winners will be announced at halftime of the Seton Hall vs. West Virginia women’s basketball game on Sunday, Feb. 1. Each recipient will be presented with a gift from NJAIAW.
