Waters Wins Rutgers Invitational

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 11, 2009) - RU junior Jeanne Waters (West Sayville, N.Y.) carded a collegiate, personal-best round of 73 on Saturday to capture victory at the Rutgers Invitational, played Friday and Saturday at the Rutgers University Golf Course. It marked the first collegiate tournament win for Waters, who finished tied with Fairleigh Dickinson's Michele Holzwarth with a 149 total after 36 holes to share individual medalist honors.
Waters registered a tournament best-tying five birdies in the Invitational and was also the event co-leader in par four scoring at plus-one. Her efforts helped the Scarlet Knights to a third place finish at the 18-team event with a 627 (316-311) total. RU compiled 17 birdies and was a tournament-best plus-13 in par three scoring.
Boston College, with three competitors in the top eight, won the Invitational for the second straight year, posting a 616 (312-304). The Eagles were six strokes better than second place St. John's (622).
Rutgers freshman Brittany Weddell (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) also played well in the 93-player field, carding a 156 (76-80) to place tied for ninth. She was joined on the Scarlet scorecard by junior Daley Owens (Taylorsville, Utah) and sophomores Lizzy Carl (Mendota Heights, Minn.) and Kristina Lee (Haddonfield, N.J.). Owens placed tied for 19th with a 159 (81-78), while both Carl and Lee finished tied for 28th with 163 totals. Lee, who had a hole-in-one for eagle, was the tournament co-leader in par three scoring at minus one.
The Scarlet Knights, under the leadership of Director of Golf Maura Waters-Ballard, return to the links October 26-27 at the Fairleigh Dickinson Invitational.
