RU Women Third after Opening Day of Rutgers Invitational

PISCATAWAY, N.J. (October 9, 2009) - The Rutgers women's golf team is in third place with a 316 score after the opening round of the Rutgers Invitational, played Friday at the Rutgers University Golf Course. Saint John's leads the 18-team event with a 308 total, four strokes ahead of second place Boston College (312) on the par 72, 6,034-yard course.
Junior Jeanne Waters (West Sayville, N.Y.) and freshman Brittany Weddell (Buzzards Bay, Mass.) both played well, carding 76s on day one to pace the Scarlet Knights and place tied for fifth overall in the 93-player field. Waters and Weddell were even on par five scoring and were both plus-one on par fours.
Michele Holzwarth of Fairleigh Dickinson is the individual leader heading into Saturday's final round after posting a 73 on Friday. Lois Kim of St. John's and Rosie Davies of Lehigh are tied for second place at 74.
Junior Daley Owens (Taylorsville, Utah) and sophomores Lizzy Carl (Mendota Heights, Minn.) and Kristina Lee (Haddonfield, N.J.) comprised the rest of the RU competing five. Owens is tied for 27th with an 81, while Carl and Lee are tied for 40th after shooting 83. Carl and Lee were both even on par three scoring, while Lee also tallied an eagle on Friday.
The second and final round will commence tomorrow with an 8:15 a.m. shotgun start. Final results will be posted on the athletics web site.
