BINGHAMTON, N.Y. (Nov. 21, 2009) – The Rutgers wrestling team will travel to Binghamton University in Binghamton, N.Y. on Sunday for the Sprawl and Brawl Duals.
RU (1-0) will open the competition against No. 15 Penn State (1-1) at 9:45 a.m. The Scarlet Knights will face Sacred Heart (1-2) for the second time in as many weeks. On Nov. 8, Rutgers opened the season with a 43-0 victory at Sacred Heart. Rutgers will close out the day by facing Northern Iowa (1-2) at 4:30 p.m.
Along with Rutgers’ opponents, the squads will be joined by host Binghamton, No. 13 Edinboro, Davidson, EIWA member Harvard, No. 19 Illinois, Michigan State, Pittsburgh, Rider, West Virginia and Wyoming.
Last Saturday, the Scarlet Knights went 39-29 overall at the Oklahoma Gold Tournament. Rutgers totaled 13 pin fall victories, including four from redshirt junior Dominick Russo (Netcong, N.J.), to place third at the event. Russo knocked off two wrestlers ranked in the top-20 in his final pair of matches to claim the heavyweight title.
“Our team is taking this as a great opportunity to go against some historically strong teams,” said Rutgers head coach Scott Goodale. “Our next step is to perform against programs of this caliber. We have to go with the mindset of being in every match and competing at the level we know we are capable of.”
Last season, Rutgers went 2-2 at the Sprawl Brawl. Rutgers defeated Clarion 21-15 and Columbia 19-15 but fell to North Carolina, 33-3, and No. 14 Boise State, 25-13.
Following the Sprawl and Brawl Duals, Rutgers will travel to Lewisburg, Pa. for a tri-meet with Bucknell and defending NCAA Champion Iowa.
