Junior Epiphanny Prince (Brooklyn, N.Y.) scored a team-high 19 points and senior Heather Zurich (Montvale, N.J.) added 11 in the loss, the fourth in the last six games for Rutgers (14-10). Senior Kia Vaughn (Bronx, N.Y.) posted her second double-digit rebounding effort of the year, grabbing 10 rebounds.
The Scarlet Knights shot 24.7 percent from the field, just 18.9 percent in the first half. They finished 4-of-15 from behind the arc.
Marissa Coleman had a game-high 22 points and 10 boards for the Terrapins (21-4).
Maryland scored the first six points and 14 of the first 16 points of the contest. Coleman converted on a short jumper with 13:17 on the clock to pull the Terps ahead, 14-2. Rutgers missed 11 of its first 12 field goal attempts before Zurich knocked down a 16-foot jumper with 12:38 remaining in the half. Zurich added two of three from the free throw line to cut the deficit to eight (14-6) 38 seconds later.
Prince, who missed her first seven shots of the game, connected on three straight, a fast-break lay-up off a turnover and a pair of three-pointers. The second triple from the top of the key trimmed the Maryland lead to 16-14 with 7:21 left in the first. That would be as close as the Scarlet Knights would come.
Maryland bridged a 25-11 run over two halves to take a 41-25 lead on a 3-pointer by Kristi Toliver with 16:59 to play. Rutgers cut it to 13 on three occasions over the next seven minutes, lastly on a triple from Prince as the shot clock was winding down. The basket made it 46-33 with 10:06 remaining but Coleman answered with a lay-up followed by two from the stripe to push the lead back out of reach.
The Knights step back into BIG EAST play, traveling to Seton Hall on Wednesday, Feb. 18.
