Rutgers Cruises to Second Straight Win
Feb 07 | Women's Tennis
WEST POINT, N.Y. – The Rutgers women’s tennis team won its second straight match, topping Army 6-1 at the Lichtenberg Tennis Center on Saturday afternoon. RU won five-of-six singles matches and swept the doubles competition to earn the victory.
Rutgers improves to 2-1 on the year, while Army falls to 0-3.
The Scarlet Knights took early control of the match by winning all three doubles bouts, including an 8-6 triumph at the No. 1 spot where Katherine Arlak (Leonia, N.J.) and Christine Tran (Centreville, Va.) teamed up to give Niki Flach and Michael Tollerton their first loss of the season.
In singles, RU got straight set victories from Amy Zhang (Plano, Texas), Jennifer Holzberg (Easton, Conn.) and Morgan Ivey (Mt. Pleasant, S.C.).
RU’s other two singles victories came in matches that each lasted over two hours. At No. 2 singles, Arlak split the first two sets with Flach before prevailing 10-4 in the super tiebreaker. At the No. 4 spot, Maryana Milchutskey (Holmdel, N.J.) took the first set 6-2 against Sarah Giles-Madden, but the freshman could not end the match in the second, dropping it 6-4. However, Milchutskey rebounded to conclude the match with an easy 6-2 win in the third and decisive set.
The Scarlet Knights will kick off BIG EAST play Saturday, Feb. 14 at Cincinnati. The match is set to begin at 4 p.m.
