Scarlet Knights Defeat Maryland 3-0 in Exhibition Play
Mar 30 | Women's Soccer
COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Junior forward Karla Schacher (Tofield, Alberta) scored two goals and sophomore midfielder Ashley Medcalf (Waipahu, Hawaii) added one of her own as the Rutgers women’s soccer team defeated the University of Maryland 3-0 in a spring exhibition match Sunday.
The two teams played three 30-minute periods, with the Scarlet Knights scoring all three of their goals in the final 30-minute frame. The goalkeeping trio of junior Erin Guthrie (Sparta, N.J.), freshman Casey Rupon (Whitehouse Station, N.J.), and freshman Emmy Simpkins (Concord, N.C.) combined to shutout the Terrapins.
Today’s match marked the Rutgers soccer debuts of freshmen Jonelle Filigno (Mississauga, Ontario) and Shannon Woeller (Vancouver, Canada), both of whom enrolled “On the Banks” in January and will compete for Rutgers this fall, and Simpkins who redshirted the 2008 campaign. The match also saw the return to competition of sophomore forward Trish DiPaolo (Sparta, N.J.). DiPaolo, who missed much of the 2007 season and all of 2008 with an ACL injury, played 25 minutes in the match.
“This match was a great opportunity, because it gave the players the opportunity to show what they have been working hard for this offseason,” said Rutgers assistant coach Mike O’Neill.
“It was nice to see girls get a chance to debut and for the team to start to build their own identity. Overall, we did a nice job today. Our defense was very solid and we attacked better as the match went on.”
The Rutgers women’s soccer team will continue their spring slate with a home doubleheader on April 4. They will play a match against a team comprised of former Rutgers players at 2 p.m., with another match against Drexel to follow at 4 p.m. Both matches will take place at the fields located behind the Louis Brown Athletic Center on Livingston campus.
