Rutgers' Prince, Speed Invited to USA Basketball Trials

Prince, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., is one of 29 players competing for a spot for the Women’s World University Games which will take place July 1-11 in Belgrade, Serbia.
A third team Associated Press All-America team selection, Prince led the team and was third in the BIG EAST in scoring (19.5 ppg). She was ranked third among league leaders in steals (2.6) and was fourth in free throw percentage (.806). Prince finished second in the conference in minutes played, averaging 37.0 per game.
The 5-9 junior guard compiled 33 double-digit scoring games, including a string of 29 straight. She recorded 16 contests with 20 or more points and had 15 or more in 26 games.
Trials to select the finalists for the world squad will be held May 14-17 at the U.S. Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo. The selected finalists will return to Colorado Springs on June 18 for training camp. The 12-member roster will be announced prior to the team’s departure to Serbia.
The World University Games is organized by the International University Sports Federation and held every other year. The last Rutgers player who earned an invite to the world trials was current Olympian Cappie Pondexter.
Speed is one of 27 athletes vying for a spot on the U19 National Team. The trials to select finalists will also be held May 14-17 in Colorado Springs with training camp commencing on July 8. The eventual 12-member roster will be announced prior to the squad’s departure to Thailand. The FIBA U19 World Championship will be held July 23-Aug. 2 in Bangkok.
The Pasadena, Calif. product was one of seven players invited to trials who helped the U.S. qualify for the this year’s U1 worlds by winning a gold medal last summer at the 2008 FIBA Americas U18 Championship in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
Speed, a 5-8 guard, saw action in 32 games this season with four starts. The first-year player averaged over 13 minutes and two points a game for RU (21-13).
